A Topical Treasury of Proverbs

A Topical Treasury of Proverbs

“I have been so blessed by my daily readings from this book. Subjects chosen are clear and contemporary and give the reader a comprehensive teaching on each subject; includes a daily reading plan of Proverbs by subject and a verse listing of every topic in each verse. The book is an excellent contribution to an understanding of the book of Proverbs. I am amazed at the depth of research that has been put into this book – the time spent on each verse to classify subjects is truly remarkable.”

93 Good Counsel (continued)
Wisdom provided in the form of advice, instruction and counsel.
Ref. Scripture
6:20-23 My child, guard the commands of your father and do not forsake the instruction of your mother. Bind them on your heart continually; fasten them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake up, they will talk to you. For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life.
7:1-3 My child, keep my words and treasure up my commands in your own keeping. Keep my commands so that you may live, and obey my instruction as your most prized possession. Bind them on your forearm; write them on the tablet of your heart.
8:10, 11 "Receive my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies, and desirable things cannot be compared to her."
Note: 8:10, 11 – The word 'my' gives personification of Wisdom.
8:12-14 "I, wisdom, live with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride and the evil way and perverse utterances. Counsel and sound wisdom belong to me; I possess understanding and might."
8:32-36 "So now, children, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction so that you may be wise, and do not neglect it. Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching at my doors day by day, waiting beside my doorway. For the one who finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. But the one who does not find me brings harm to himself; all who hate me love death."
Note: 8:32-36 – The words 'me' and 'my' gives personification of Wisdom.

Tom's Corner
Proverbs Chapter 8
Tom Clarke Chapter 8 of Proverbs presented a problem for me with the use of 'I', 'my', 'me', etc. See the footnotes under verses 8:10,11 and in 8:32-36 on this page. These footnotes were added for the sake of clarification to each of the 100 topics .

When 'I', 'my', 'me', etc. appears in this way, it is not Solomon speaking but rather a personification of Wisdom. In other chapters, Solomon spoke 'My child' which was him speaking. Note that some people suggest that Wisdom in Proverbs is a representation of Jesus Christ.
