Many people are not familiar with the gaura, but what a joy it is! This pink and white flower has been placed near each entrance of the garden. It starts to flower in mid-June and will continue in profusion through the first heavy frost.
Plant lovers have often admired these long-lasting and delicate flowers, noting their ability to "dance" in the breeze. Even on seemingly windless days, the flower heads gently move in response to the wind.
In the Bible, the Hebrew word ruwach can be translated as both Holy Spirit and wind. As this flower dances in the wind, the gaura reminds us of the Holy Spirit's presence — to refresh us and to fill us.
During September, the precious roses which sometimes go through a dry spell in mid-summer now come back as the evenings become cooler. The Russian sage continues blossoming although their colors can fade to more of a soft grayish tone. The broccoli-shaped autumn joy comes alive with fresh, pinkish flowers that eventually change tones many times to eventually become an autumn rust color. Other flowers in September include the blanket flower, also known by its Latin name Gaillardia, and the lovely chrysanthemum.
