A Topical Treasury of Proverbs

A Topical Treasury of Proverbs

“I have been so blessed by my daily readings from this book. Subjects chosen are clear and contemporary and give the reader a comprehensive teaching on each subject; includes a daily reading plan of Proverbs by subject and a verse listing of every topic in each verse. The book is an excellent contribution to an understanding of the book of Proverbs. I am amazed at the depth of research that has been put into this book – the time spent on each verse to classify subjects is truly remarkable.”

92 Good Counsel
Wisdom provided in the form of advice, instruction and counsel.
Ref. Scripture
1:1, 2 The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: To learn wisdom and moral instruction, and to discern wise counsel.
1:8, 9 Listen, my child, to the instruction from your father, and do not forsake the teaching from your mother. For they will be like an elegant garland on your head, and like pendants around your neck.
1:20, 23, 29-30 Wisdom calls out in the street: … "If only you will respond to my rebuke, then I will pour out my thoughts to you and I will make my words known to you. … Because they hated moral knowledge, and did not choose to fear the Lord, they did not comply with my advice, they spurned all my rebuke."
2:6-8 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He stores up effective counsel for the upright, and is like a shield for those who live with integrity, to guard the paths of the righteous and to protect the way of his pious ones.
3:32b The Lord reveals his intimate counsel to the upright.
4:1, 2 Listen, children, to a father's instruction, and pay attention so that you may gain discernment. Because I give you good instruction, do not forsake my teaching.
4:10-13 Listen, my child, and accept my words, so that the years of your life will be many. I will guide you in the way of wisdom and I will lead you in upright paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered, and when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; protect it, because it is your life.

Tom's Corner
The Heirarchy of Wisdom
Tom Clarke I learned a great deal about Proverbs by doing the analysis for this book. To many, the Book of Proverbs is known as a book of Wisdom. In categorizing Proverbs in this way, it became readily apparent to me that this is more than just a book of Solomon's wise sayings; rather, this analysis revealed the Lord as the source of all wisdom.

In Proverbs, wisdom is presented as knowledge, understanding, discernment, and instruction. When you begin going through these topics, and particularly if you follow the Daily Reading Plan in the back of the book, you will hopefully see this heirarchy more clearly.
